What is Cell Phone Racing? |
THE HISTORY OF CELL PHONE RACING
Cellular phone racing originated in a diner in New Jersey. Legend has it that Mr. P. Rell and a few of his friends were waiting for their sandwiches with cell phones on the table. Both P. Rell and his friend Boris (name changed to protect the innocent), being good restaurant customers, had their phones set on vibrate. The two were staring bored at the table when they simultaneously got called on their cell phone. Cell phone racing was born. Later on, cell phone racing rapidly spread throughout northern and central New Jersey, and into New York City as well, mostly by word of mouth. It is slowly reaching the world. The first cell phone racing tournament, between eight racers, took place on December 12, 2000, in the Main Street Diner on Route 1 in New Jersey. In a grueling 50-foot marathon race, Ms. Kelly Y.'s black Panasonic beat runner-up Mr. Matt M.'s turquoise and gray Nokia by a 14.3 second margin over low-pile carpeting. |
